Year 6
Children in Year 6 are split into 3 main classes: 6 Beta, 6 Delta and 6 Gamma. In Year 6, the children prepare for their SATs and teachers also assist them with the transition to secondary school. On average, there are around 30 pupils in each class.
Throughout the history topics, the children will explore Crime and Punishment and the Maya Civilisation with opportunities for them to develop their writing skills in these subject areas too. In geography, children will learn about North and South America and explore in more detail around the Amazon. Weekly science lessons as well as RE and PSHE also form part of our curriculum in Year 6.
In Year 6, your child’s class teacher or teaching assistant will hear them read regularly. Children are given opportunities to read within all aspects of the curriculum to improve their fluency and comprehension skills.
In the summer term, the children will have the opportunity to attend a residential trip to Plas Dol-y-Moch in North Wales. During this trip, they will be able to experience a range of outdoor activities such as gorge walking, kayaking, orienteering and mountain walking as well as being able to develop their independence, resilience and team work skills.

Homework
Each Wednesday, children are given their homework to stick in their homework books. We ask for the homework to be completed and returned to school by the following Wednesday.
They will receive:
- Spellings
- Maths
- Grammar
All homework is based on what the children have been learning in those lessons each week. If they are unable to complete any homework they can bring it in early to ask their teacher for help.
Each half term, children will be given optional topic homework to complete in a separate homework book. They are given a range of tasks and activities to help them show what they have learnt in science and history or geography. Children should bring this homework book should be brought back into school at the end of each half term to show their teacher the work they have done.
We also expect children to be reading at home 5 times per week for at least 20 minutes. Reading is extremely important and will support children in all areas of their learning.

Other Information
Year 6 children need to bring their reading books and diaries every day. Please ensure reading diaries are kept up to date when they read at home. Teachers and TAs will read regularly with children in school and will check reading diaries and make a note to show when a child has read with an adult in school.
If you have a problem and would like to speak to your child’s teacher, they will need to be contacted either through the My Child At School (MCAS) app.
