In year 1 we encourage and support children to develop independence and nurture a positive attitude to learning. The children will experience a range of fun and engaging learning activities.
There are three Year 1 classes, each class is supported by teaching assistants. There is an additional teacher in Key Stage 1 who manages intervention groups to support children in their learning.
Every morning children have a Literacy and Mathematics lesson. Children are taught phonics four times a week, where we continue to follow the Read Write Inc programme introduced in Reception.
In the afternoons, children are taught History and Geography through the Connected Curriculum and Science, RE, ICT and PSHE as separate lessons. One afternoon per week, the children take part in a carousel which involves music, art and PE.
The children read weekly with the teaching assistant and once every 2 weeks with the teacher. We encourage you to read 5 times a week with your child. Reading books can be changed first thing in the morning so please remind your child to do this if needed.
Children are provided with a piece of fruit each day as a healthy snack and you have the option of buying milk for your child, by arrangement with the school.
Letters that have been circulated to parents are available for you to view and download here.

On a carousel day pupils will spend half the day doing art, PE and music. On these days please send children to school in a PE kit. Children will be asked to tie long hair back and remove all jewellery for PE lessons.
Each class also has an additional class PE slot. The class teacher will inform you of this.
|Carousel day for Year 1: Friday|
Parents will be informed about details of any school trips throughout the year.
Each week there will be maths targets to practise and spellings to learn. We ask for the homework folders to be kept in the children’s book bags as they tested throughout the week. New homework will be ready in their folders by Fridays.
The subject areas covered are detailed in the curriculum letter sent to all parents which can be found by clicking here.
Children can bring a bottle of water each day (no juice please) and can refill them in school when required. Please label the water bottles. Please label the children’s clothes with their name and class so we can return any lost items.
We are happy to talk to you however first thing in the morning is not always the best time to catch us. We are always available after school - let us know and we will arrange an appointment.
When sending any money to school please place it in a sealed envelope labelled with the child’s name, class, amount enclosed and purpose and hand it to the member of staff at the door in the morning. We are not able to take money from you at the end of the day. Alternatively you can take it to the school’s main reception.
If you have any concerns please raise them in the first instance with your child’s teacher or teaching assistant. Should you need to escalate the issue please call the school to arrange an appointment with Sue Squires (Deputy Head) or Jacqueline McGibney (Headteacher).
